Spandrels

Spandrels

Spandrels are designed primarily in accordance with AS3600:2018 section 8, with consideration of Section 10 where spandrels experience high axial loads.

Spandrel Properties

Spandrel properties may be edited via the properties dialog which can be viewed by double clicking on a spandrel. Note that spandrels on other selected levels within the chain of the currently selected spandrel will also be edited.

Spandrel Properties

Type Parameters

For spandrels with no type defined ('Custom' type), all type parameters may be freely edited. For spandrels with types defined, type parameters will be locked-out, and the user will need to edit these parameters in the 'Edit Type' dialog.

  • Width - The width of the spandrel beam. Usually this is the thickness of the wall in which it sits
  • Depth - The depth of the spandrel beam
  • f'c - The characteristic concrete compressive strength of the concrete material forming the spandrel
  • Cover - Clear distance from the external face of the spandrel to the ligature

Custom Reinforcement

If the "Use minimum reinforcement" toggle is checked, Dove will automatically apply the code minimum bending reinforcement for the spandrel. Otherwise, the custom reinforcement defined within this section will be used in the design.

  • Bake - Clicking the Bake button while the "Use minimum reinforcement" toggle is checked will convert the automatically assigned minimum reinforcement to custom reinforcement and pre-populate the reinforcement property fields
  • Bar Size - Size of the spandrel bending reinforcement
  • No Top/Bottom Bars - The number of bars per reinforcement layer in the top and bottom faces of the spandrel
  • No Top/Bottom Layers - The number of reinforcemnt layers at both the top and bttom of the beam. Note that the layer spacing can be adjusted in the Dove settings.
  • Ligature Size - Size of the ligature bars
  • Ligature Spacing - Spacing of ligature sets
  • fsy - yield strength of reinforcing steel

Instance Parameters

Instance parameters are definable for all spandrels.

  • Exposure Class - Concrete exposure class to AS3600
  • Ignore Concrete Shear Capacity - Vuc will be taken as zero. This will be applicable to most spandrels and is on by default.
  • Spandrel Chain - The chain to which this spandrel belongs. Select 'New Chain' to create a new chain for this spandrel or 'No Chain' to orphan the spandrel.
